Safari turns 20 today!

Post by Nahid92 »

Today marks the 20th anniversary of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs introducing Safari for Mac at Macworld Expo 2003 in San Francisco. Back then, Apple touted Safari as "the fastest web browser ever made for the Mac" - and I don't think any other browser has matched it to this day. Apple said the original version of Safari loaded pages more than three times faster compared to Microsoft's Internet Explorer on the Mac. As part of a five-year deal between Apple and Microsoft, Internet Explorer was the default Mac browser from 1998 until the release of OS X Panther with Safari in October 2003.

"Safari is the fastest browser on the Mac and we anticipate that many will consider it the best browser ever created," Jobs said in a January 2003 press release . "We're bringing innovation back to this category with the first brand phone number list new browser we've made in many years." In January 2003, a public beta of Safari for OS X Jaguar was released, with key features such as the WebKit rendering engine for faster browsing, Google Search features integrated directly into the toolbar, improved bookmark management, optional pop-up blocker, simpler download process files and more. The mobile version of Safari was released for the iPhone in 2007 and for the iPad in 2010.

The browser continues to use WebKit on all Apple platforms. Safari was eventually eclipsed by Google Chrome, which was released in 2008 and is now the most popular web browser in the world for all PCs and Macs. Nevertheless, Apple claims that Safari remains the world's fastest desktop browser and, on average, loads frequently visited websites 50% faster than Chrome on Mac.
